The Oscars welcome The Broken Circle Breakdown and The Great Beauty

The LUX Prize laureate The Broken Circle Breakdown is running for the Oscars!

The nominations for the Oscars were finally announced and they bring good news for the LUX Prize. Felix Van Groeningen’s The Broken Circle Breakdown will vie for the Best Foreign Language Film statuette.

The LUX Prize winner has established itself as one of the strongest front-runners in the category, especially after receiving the FIPRESCI prize for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year at the recent Palm Springs International Film Festival. The Belgian submission and heartbreaking story of Didier and Elise has managed to catch the Academy’s voters’ eye (and heart). The Broken Circle Breakdown is the seventh Belgian title to get a nomination in this category, only two years after the success of Michael R. Roskam’s Bullhead.

Furthermore, LUX Prize Official Selection title The Great Beauty has also managed to enter the final shortlist of the category. Another strong front-runner, the Italian submission is the dazzling depiction of journalist Jep Gambardella’s life set against the decadent beauty of the eternal city – and has already won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and three trophies at the latest European Film Awards.

In the history of the LUX Prize, one of the selected films was previously nominated in the category (Götz Spielmann’s Revanche, in 2009) and two others were among the shortlisted films (Stephan Komandarev’s The World is Big and Salvation Lurks Around the Corner, in 2010, and Ursula Meier’s Sister, in 2013).

Will Felix van Groeningen continue his success adding the Oscar to the LUX Prize? Or will Paolo Sorrentino take it home? The winners will be unveiled on March 2nd, during a ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.

Be sure not to miss it!
