My Life as a Courgette to represent Switzerland in the Oscars race

My Life as a Courgette
The LUX Prize has spoken, Switzerland has followed suit: My Life as a Courgette by Claude Barras, boasting a screenplay by Céline Sciamma, will be the Swiss representative in the race for the upcoming Oscar, within the Best Foreign-language Film category.

The Swiss Oscars jury selected My Life as a Courgette for its originality and splendid art direction, not to mention its social point of view brimming with hope, as the film finally gives a voice to those children who don’t have one themselves.

The animated feature, which is also one of the three finalists for the LUX Prize alongside Maren Ade’s Toni Erdmann and Leyla Bouzid’s As I Open My Eyes, made an impression on critics and the general public alike when it was world-premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. It began its rise to power one month later when it won the top prize and the Audience Award at the renowned Annecy International Animation Film Festival (read the news). Its journey from here on in will undoubtedly be even longer and chock-full of surprises.

The rights to the film have already been sold in over 20 European countries, as well as in the Near East and Asia. Deals with UK- and North American-based distributors are also currently under negotiation. It is slated for release in Swiss theatres this autumn (with Praesens Film in charge of its distribution), while France (Gebeka Films) and Belgium (Cinéart) will have to wait until October, and Germany (Polyband) and Italy (Teodora Film Distribuzione) December.
The LUX Film Days will do the rest, though, as the film will be screened in 28 European Union member countries through this initiative taking the LUX finalists to special screenings and festivals all over the continent, subtitled in 24 different languages.
The LUX Film Prize winner will be announced on 23 November, while the Oscars will be given out on 29 February 2017, after having unveiled the nominees on 24 January. Will any of the statuettes be for My Life as a Courgette?
