European Film Awards to unveil winners this weekend

The European Film Awards 2013, handed out by the European Film Academy, will be held this Saturday, December 7, at Berlin’s Haus der Beliner Festspiele.

This year, the favourite film – with no less than six nominations – is also a LUX Prize nominee. Felix Van Groeningen’s The Broken Circle Breakdown is vying for the awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay (co-written by Van Groeningen and Carl Joos), Best Actress (Veerle Baekens), Best Actor (Johan Heldenbergh) and the People’s Choice Award.

Valeria Golino’s Miele will also be present at the gala, as a nominee for the European Discovery – FIPRESCI prize. The ceremony will also see another four of the LUX Prize official selection films in its categories: Paolo Sorrentino’s La Grande Bellezza has garnered four nominations (Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Screenplay), Jan Ole Gerster’s Oh Boy appears in four categories (Best Film, Best Actor, European Discovery and People’s Choice Award), and both Gabriela Pichler’s Eat Sleep Die and Neus BallúsLa Plaga are present in one (European Discovery).

The awards ceremony will be presented by German comedy star Ange Engelke and will be a well-attended event. Catherine Deneuve, Pedro Almodóvar, Carice Van Houten, Christophe Lambert and Kristin Scott Thomas, among others, are set to appear on stage.
